How Accepting Are You?

There is no greater gift in a relationship — working, friendship, familial, romantic — than to accept someone for exactly who they are, plusses and minuses included. It takes strength of character to do this, because in order to accept someone else without feeling threatened by his or her strengths or uncomfortable with his or her areas for development, one must first accept one’s complete self. Sometimes, the things we find most difficult to accept in others, we haven’t accepted in ourselves. And since we all are always developing and changing — it is an ever-evolving journey.

This week’s Challenge: This week, I will work on accepting who I am — in my entirety — so that I can accept others, in their entirety.

Avoiding being Adoring (overuse): When we start to overuse accepting, focusing only on the positives, then we tip the balance towards adoring. We all have our strengths, and our weaknesses. To focus only on someone’s strengths does them a disservice, because then we are no longer accepting them for the whole of who they are. The relationship moves from an authentic appreciation to pandering.
