Self-doubt is ruining your life. Here’s the simplest way to stop it in its tracks.
Self-doubt is ruining your life. Here’s the simplest way to stop it in its tracks.

We all experience it.

There are very few people I know who do not experience doubt at some point in their lives. Self-doubt is the worst because it’s so sneaky and deceptive. It’s like a grade school bully who is happiest when you are at your most vulnerable. It will punch you in the face, push you in the mud and steal your lunch money when you’re not looking. The worse you feel the stronger it gets.

You can’t ignore it.

Good luck trying to ignore self-doubt because the harder you try the louder it gets. You’re tough though so your instinct is to push back, to fight, toe to toe, head to head there’s just one problem. It is stronger than you and it knows that. The reason you can’t fight self-doubt is simple. It is a part of you. You can no more rid yourself of it than you can rid yourself of any other part of what makes you who you are.

Hugging porcupines.

So how do fight something stronger than you, how do you rid yourself of something so self-destructive? Simple, you stop fighting and meet self-doubt with self-compassion. As counterintuitive as it may seem the more willing you are to embrace your faults and meet them with self-compassion the less power they will hold over you. At first, it may seem like hugging a porcupine, but if you continue to practice, self-compassion will slowly change doubt to confidence.
